Welcome to Fiber Optics Lab

Feberary 10, 2008

The Fiber Optics Lab at Department of Electrical Engineering, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University specialises in research into photonic crystal fiber devices and sensors, optical fiber sensors, gas detection, gas discharge in hollow-core fibers, fiber gas lasers and amplifiers, fiber Bragg gratings and long period gratings, structural condition monitoring and laser material processing.

The research work in the lab is supported by project-specific grants from Hong Kong Research Grant Council, Innovation Technology Commision of Hong Kong Government, Natural Science Fundation of China, and post-graduate and postdoctoral programme from the university. The overal research grants and contracts over the past ten years are in excess of HKD30million. Our academic collaborator include University of Strathclyde, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, OFS lab, Tsinghua University, Harbin Engineering University, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

Professor Wei Jin

Professor Wei Jin received his BEng and MSc degrees from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics in 1984 and 1987, respectively. He received the Ph.D degree in 1991 in fiber optics from University of Strathclyde and afterwards was employed as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the same University till the end of 1995. He joined the Department of Electrical Engineering of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University as an assistant Professor in 1996 and was promoted to an associate professor in 1998 and a professor in 2003.

His research interests are photonic crystal fibers and devices, optical fiber sensors, fiber lasers and amplifiers, optical gas detectors, condition monitoring of electrical power transformers, and civil and mechanical structures.

He edited 2 books, published nearly 400 technical papers and holds 8 patents in the area of fiber optic devices and sensors. He secured research funds of over HK$30 million and has sucessfully supervised or co-supervised 11 Ph.D. students during the past 10 years.

He received the President Award of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 1999 for outstanding performance in Research and Scholarly Activities, PTeC’s Outstanding Professional Service and Innovation Awards in 2004 for successful technology transfer, Research Grant Achievement Award from Faculty of Engineering of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2005, Distinguished Young Scholar Award (Category B) from the National Science Foundation of China in 2006.

Dr. Jin is a senior member of IEEE, a member of SPIE and OSA, and a vice Chairman of the Fiber and Integrated Society of China. He has served as a Technical Program Committee member/session chair of over 20 international and national conferences. He also served as an assessment panel member of the National Science Foundation of China.
